Meet the Judges
Mary Lane’s soulful vocals have been a staple on the West Side Chicago blues circuit for more than sixty years. After honing her vocal skills in the local juke joints of the Arkansas Delta with Howlin’ Wolf, Robert Nighthawk, Little Junior Parker and James Cotton, Mary left the only home she knew in 1953 and traveled with her trusted friend, Howlin’ Wolf, to chase their musical dreams to Chicago. It didn’t take long for Mary to share her incredible talents in performances with Buddy Guy, Junior Wells and Elmore James. Those friendships and partnerships spanned decades and Mary has been pouring her heart into her music ever since. She was recently inducted to the Chicago Blues Hall of Fame with a ceremony at Buddy Guy’s Legends, had a resolution honoring her passed by the Cook County Board of Commissioners and sponsored by President Toni Preckwinkle, is the subject of the award winning new documentary, “I Can Only Be Mary Lane”. Mary’s much anticipated new album “Travelin’ Woman” will be released on March 9, 2019. We’re honored to have Mary join us for a second year as a judge of the Lawyers Rock fundraiser.
John Locallo, Partner at Amari & Locallo in Chicago, is one of the IBF’s original lawyers who rock. A past president of the Illinois State Bar Association, John has worked with Lawyers Rock since the beginning and has performed many times throughout the years with his band, 5-thirty, bringing home some trophies along the way. This year, John will once again join the judging panel to help us crown a new Hall of Fame award winner!

We are pleased to welcome back Joe Bisceglia, Past President of the ISBA and Partner at Jenner & Block, as our warm-up act to kick off Lawyers Rock!
Joe Bisceglia is an experienced singer/songwriter/entertainer who has performed solo, as well as with a number of other bands and artists, over his long 'second career' in music, throughout the Chicago area. He has performed earlier for the Illinois Bar Foundation in such venues as Buddy Guy’s Legends, Lincoln Hall, and the Double Door. He currently also performs regularly at venues in southwest Michigan, including the Acorn Theater in Three Oaks. His powerful high energy vocal and guitar renditions of a wide variety of popular music, both new and old, as well as his original compositions, appeal to all audiences.
Meet the Bands
Three lawyers and three businessmen, none of us professional musicians, 5-thirty was conceived on 5/30/2004 during happy hour on Chicago’s Rush Street. Though many believe our name refers to happy hour, it refers to the date. Soon thereafter, through a series of coincidences, the rest of the band was formed. Like the Beatles and U2, we still have our original members -- Tom Battista (Law Offices of Thomas M. Battista), Carlos Vera (Johnson & Bell), John Locallo (Amari & Locallo), Scott Parker, Matt Hanssel and Allen O’Keefe.
For years the band practiced in a northwest side garage performing for the occasional driver that stopped his car in the alley to light a cigarette. The word must have gotten out because neighbors, friends and even dogs began listening too. Our goal was to play at a Chicago bar. Our big break was to play at the very first Illinois Bar Foundation Lawyers Rock at Buddy Guy’s Legends in 2011. We thought it would be our first and only rock show. But after the crowd went nuts, we decided to keep on rocking. Though we now play regularly in bars, we are 5-thirty and we are a garage band!
Flood Waters got together in 2014, and all members live in Elmhurst, Illinois. The band feels strongly about giving back, so it does the vast majority of its gigs for charity - doing good for the world while having fun and making music! Flood Waters' two "lawyer members", Amy Manning & Morgan Moran, practiced together in the same firm when they were baby lawyers. Flood Waters performed at their first Lawyers Rock in 2016, winning the Fan Favorite Award, and they are excited to be back for more!
Flood Waters is: Amy Manning, Chair of Antitrust, Trade and Commercial Litigation at McGuireWoods LLP - Vocals, Drums; Morgan Moran, Assistant General Counsel at Astellas Pharma - Bass; Amy McConnell - Vocals; Brian Mehta - Drums, Vocals; Michael Stavridis - Guitar; Joe Spedale - Guitar; and Andy Demotte - Keys, Guitar
The Thornes are a group primarily composed of fathers of children who attend (or have attended) Hawthorne Scholastic Academy, a Chicago Public Magnet school located in the shadow of Wrigley Field, the home of the World Champion Chicago Cubs. At one time, the band had 14 children attending the school at the same time!
The band is comprised of a group of talented musicians all of whom played (or still play) with Chicago area bands, including three lawyers: bassist Joe Gagliardo, a Judge on the Illinois Court of Claims; horns Steve Schneck, Of Counsel with Miner, Barnhill and Galland (and noted jazz musician); and drummer Peter Birnbaum, the President of Attorneys' Title Guaranty Fund and Chief Justice of the Illinois Court of Claims. Bob Barnett, Louie Kritikos, and Jeff Moster complete The Thornes.
The primary mission of the band is to combine our love of music with fundraising for causes of special interest to us such as Hawthorne School and the Illinois Bar Foundation. The band has played in several great venues such as Adler Planetarium, Lincoln Park Zoo, Buddy Guys, The Double Door and Schuba's. The Thornes have been privileged to play with and as the opening act for a number of great bands and musicians, most notably Big Head Todd and the Monsters. The band has previously competed in Lawyers Rock, winning both the "Best Band" and "Fan Favorite" Awards and they’re looking to bring another win home this year!
Check out a sampling of The Thornes' performance from the 2018 Lawyers Rock show below.
